AI investment outpaces data readiness: the GS1 US Supply Chain Readiness Gap study

GS1 US published *The Supply Chain Readiness Gap* on November 3, 2026. Almost 60% of surveyed organizations report having automated most supply chain processes or implemented AI/ML; only 38% have centralized systems integrating real-time data. Another 32% still manually integrate information from multiple sources, 41% struggle to move successful pilots to scale, and 62% identify fragmented data as a major obstacle, compared with 63% citing insufficient funding.
The figures distinguish adoption from execution readiness. A planning assistant or autonomous agent may run over disconnected supplier, inventory and transaction records without being able to reconcile which record defines the actual decision state. Real value therefore depends on common identifiers, reconciled operational records and accountable ownership of the data used in decisions. The trade-off is sequencing: investing in data foundations before expanding agent deployment slows visible rollout but limits the multiplication of contradictory decisions.
