Canada’s manufacturing expansion is partly inventory-driven

July PMI data shows production growth alongside worsening delivery times, stockpiling and rising input costs.

Canada’s July 2 manufacturing PMI release shows production growth alongside worsening supplier delivery times, defensive inventory accumulation and the highest input-cost reading since July 2022.

The planning implication is that reported expansion may partly reflect disruption-led purchasing rather than sustained end demand. If safety-stock accumulation is absorbed into baseline forecasts, planners risk creating a second inventory correction when transport conditions normalise.

The principal failure mode is treating precautionary purchasing as structural demand and allowing temporary lead-time assumptions to harden into long-term inventory policy.
