Procurement AI is advancing faster than multi-tier supplier evidence
EcoVadis data exposes the gap between AI-supported supplier decisions and the evidence available below Tier 1.
EcoVadis reports that 80% of rated Tier-1 suppliers have no documented process for identifying or managing sustainability risks in their own supply chains. The index also identifies substantial gaps in upstream emissions measurement and grievance mechanisms.
The affected decision is supplier qualification and intervention prioritisation. Procurement AI can rank suppliers only as reliably as the underlying evidence permits. Value requires granular, verified and traceable supplier data that distinguishes disclosed policy from operating practice.
The principal failure mode is decision-grade confidence being inferred from questionnaires, estimates or first-tier visibility. More sophisticated scoring does not compensate for missing evidence deeper in the supply network.
