Evaluating agentic AI for demand forecasting requires more than forecast accuracy
TechTarget presents agentic demand forecasting as a change in how forecasting is operated, not just a new model. In its definition, an agent combines autonomy, goal-driven reasoning and awareness of changing signals, allowing it to gather information, adjust parameters and trigger actions without user input at every step.
Four conditions shape viability
The article argues that evaluation starts with data readiness: internal transactional history, external signals and unstructured information must be accessible and usable. It then adds three further tests: explainability and human review, compatibility with existing ERP and planning systems, and total cost of ownership, including integration, compute, maintenance and change management.
Measure decisions and scale progressively
TechTarget recommends judging value through inventory outcomes as well as forecast accuracy, including stockouts, excess inventory and obsolescence. It proposes a contained pilot, then supervised deployment, before broader rollout once performance, governance and integration have been validated.
