SAP's autonomous supply chain thesis shifts the bottleneck to decision orchestration

SAP presents the Autonomous Supply Chain as a shift in operating model: people define intent, assistants coordinate, and agents execute. Jasbir Singh Khanuja emphasizes that the challenge is no longer just deploying Agentic AI tools, but reconnecting detection, decision, and action across planning, procurement, production, and logistics. The number of agents is not, however, a performance indicator. When multiple agents simultaneously optimize cost, service, risk, or inventory, their recommendations can become incompatible. The true differentiating capability then becomes conflict resolution, objective hierarchy, and the ability to detect when a decision assumption is no longer valid. To create value, each autonomous action must be linked to a business objective, a dated data context, an authority limit, and an escalation or rollback mechanism. The main risk is multiplying agents faster than cross-functional decision rules, thereby accelerating local optimization while degrading global coordination.
