Gartner's 2031 disruption forecast is really a decision-autonomy test

Supply Chain Digital's George Cooper reported on 19 March 2026 Gartner's forecast that 60% of supply-chain disruptions could be resolved without human intervention by 2031. The 60% figure is a forward-looking prediction rather than a measured current level of autonomous resolution.

The more useful planning question is which disruption decisions can safely move from recommendation to autonomous execution. Gartner distinguishes lower-risk decisions, where automation can expand earlier, from higher-stakes situations where AI should continue to augment human judgment while technology, data and organizational capabilities mature.

Dataleo perspective: the 2031 number should be treated as an architecture challenge rather than an automation target. The relevant operating model requires explicit decision classes, authority boundaries and fallback paths. The failure mode is optimizing for the percentage of decisions automated rather than for the consequences of an incorrect autonomous action.
